The Boston Plan for Excellence (formerly the Boston Plan for Excellence - Boston Annenberg Challenge) works in close partnership with the Boston Public Schools to improve instruction through the implementation of the "Essentials to Whole-School Improvement." These organizational and instructional practices include: identifying and using a school-wide instructional focus, analyzing student work and data in relation to standards, creating a targeted professional development plan, learning and using best teaching practices, aligning resources with the instructional focus, and involving parents and the community in standards and assessments.
Significant evidence demonstrates that BPE has improved classroom practice, which has resulted in increased student achievement. As a result of these successes, the Boston Public Schools adopted the BPE model as a blueprint of reform for all district schools.
In 2001, the Annenberg Foundation awarded a second $10 million grant to the Boston Plan to extend the work for five more years. More than half of the grant will continue to support coaching in all schools. The grant will also enable the district to add three high-level Instructional Leaders for principal support and supervision, to hire additional parent liaisons, and to support innovation in Pilot Schools.
