The Eccles/Annenberg Challenge was launched as a response to the changing needs of an increasingly diverse and mobile student population. Building on a district commitment to shared governance, the Challenge called upon Annenberg Site Teams of parents, teachers and community members at each school to initiate a comprehensive, data-based examination of student and school achievement. Guided by these reports, the Challenge and district focused upon plans for school improvement. These efforts were led by the overarching Eccles/Annenberg Challenge objectives of advocacy which ensured that every student was known by an adult, professional development that aimed to improve teacher skills, collaboration that enabled cooperation with community agencies and businesses, and clustering for cohesion of schools working together to meet student needs. Through its dedication to every student's success, academic achievement rose and the Challenge worked toward its goal of "providing a powerful learning experience for every student, in every classroom, every day."
