What Do We Mean by Strategies?
Educators have followed many strategies in the pursuit of excellence and equity. Advocates for each strategy operate from widely differing - and sometimes conflicting - definitions and assumptions regarding excellence and equity and, for the most part, do not coordinate their efforts with other strategies.
Each strategy has much of value to offer but, by itself, is not enough to achieve equity and excellence at scale. The goal of this Web site is to encourage dialogue and more collaborative work across the different strategies, informed by the multiple perspectives within each.
The Institute's forum Understanding Educational Equity and Excellence at Scale identified five general strategies educators are using to seek high-quality education for all students. Those strategies are:
- Choice: Allowing Families to Choose Schools
- Beyond Schools: Community-Based Learning Opportunities and Supplemental Education
- Culture: Socio-Cultural Identity and the Context of Learning
- Instruction: High-Quality Teaching and Learning
- Policy: Allocation of Financial and Other Resources through Policy and Governance
