Putting Kids on the Pathway to College:
How Is Your School Doing? A College Pathways Rubric

By Carol Ascher, Anne T. Henderson, and Cindy Maguire

[May 2008]

Description
This rubric enables high schools — and their districts, partners, and community — to assess the effectiveness of their current programs and practices at helping students graduate on time and ready for college-level work.

The rubric identifies good practices for each strategy (or component of the rubric) and describes three levels of implementation for each practice, from beginning stages to reaching most students. Examples of specific practices from thirteen schools are provided as guides.

A blank rubric form allows any stakeholder to assess the extent to which a school is carrying out the four strategies. A list of resources provides opportunities for further information.

Background
The rubric is based on the findings of a study of thirteen New York City high schools that are “beating the odds” in bringing low-performing ninth-graders to high school graduation and college or technical school enrollment.

The study identified four key strategies these schools used to help their students succeed — academic rigor, networks of timely supports, college expectations and access, and effective use of data — and the practices the schools used to develop these strategies.
