THE COLLEGE PATHWAYS TOOL SERIES

The College Pathways series of tools is based on a study of thirteen New York City high schools that are “beating the odds” in improving college access for low-performing ninth-graders. The study identified key strategies and practices these schools used to help their students succeed.

These tools include rubrics, surveys, focus group protocols, and more. They are designed to help high schools and their partners examine how well they are preparing students, especially low-income students, to graduate on time, ready for college-level work, with a college or technical school acceptance letter in hand. The tools also help schools understand and adopt the practices that researchers identified in the Beating the Odds schools.

This rubric enables high schools and their districts, partners, and community to assess the effectiveness of their current programs and practices at helping students graduate on time and ready for college-level work. The rubric identifies good practices, describes three levels of implementation for each one, gives examples of specific practices from the Beating the Odds schools, and provides a blank rubric form and a list of resources.

CREATING A PATHWAY TO COLLEGE: How Is Our School Doing? A College Pathways Student Survey Tool

This student survey complements the College Pathways Rubric as a “reality check” to find out whether students agree (or disagree) that they experience in your school the good practices described in the rubric. The survey also asks about what programs the school offers to support students’ timely graduation and preparation for college and about what the students themselves find useful.
