The terrible destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina exposed for all the world what educators have long known: America remains deeply divided by race and class, and the lack of opportunities for poor people and people of color have devastating consequences. Given that reality, how can we ensure equity and excellence for all children? In this issue of Voices in Urban Education, four authors express sadness and anger at the inequities highlighted by Katrina and point to what needs to be done for a better future.
