cover for VUE 6 EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE: VUE 6
Schools and districts are under enormous pressure to use evidence to decide on appropriate policies and practices. But many educators are uncertain about what counts as evidence or how data and research can inform practice. This issue of Voices in Urban Education, from the Annenberg Institute, looks at the latest thinking about evidence-based practice from four perspectives that address the practical needs of educators.

cover for Datawarehousing FROM DATA TO DECISIONS: Lessons from School Districts Using Data Warehousing
In the era of No Child Left Behind, school districts are collecting quantities of data to comply with state and federal mandates. But if districts — especially those that serve urban and disadvantaged communities — are to educate all children to high standards, they must vastly improve their antiquated and fragmented systems for accessing and analyzing that data. A new Annenberg Institute report looks at eight districts that have used data warehousing to make better school-improvement decisions.

Peer Observation icon PEER OBSERVATION TOOLS
Peer observation, in which small groups of practitioners observe one another's work, take notes, and discuss what they learned, is a useful way to gather information about adult practice in the school, reflect on it, and use it to improve teaching and learning. Peer Observation, the new Data Focus topic of the Annenberg Institute's Tools for School Improvement Web site, offers information, protocols, and other tools to help practitioners help each other to improve their work in classrooms in a respectful, collegial, and productive way.

KEY PROVISIONS OF IDEA 2004 GIVE REASON FOR CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM
Pia Durkin, a principal associate in district redesign at the Annenberg Institute, sees three key changes in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act 2004 that hold potential to help districts better support students with disabilities. In an article in The Special Educator, Durkin describes how provisions establishing effective practices in dispute resolution, discipline, and general education capacity building could, with well-crafted and accountable implementation, shift more resources (time, money, and staffing) to schools and classrooms.
