The Annenberg Institute and the Rhode Island Children's Crusade collaborated on a study of community attitudes about high school graduation requirements as part of Providence's high school redesign initiative. The study reports on the views of community members, elicited in focus groups and interviews. The results of the study helped inform the planning for proposed new graduation requirements for the city's schools, which is now under consideration by the school board.
The third issue of the Institute's new periodical, Voices in Urban Education, addresses the emerging topic of adolescent literacy. While most attention on literacy has focused on early reading, educators are recognizing the serious literacy deficits of high school students. Literacy is much more than being able to read literary texts; students must be "literate" in all their subjects if they are to get more than the most basic information from their textbooks and other resources. The four articles in this issue consider who is responsible for ensuring that adolescents are literate and how students can be encouraged to expand their literacy skills through both conventional and unconventional forms.
