cover for VUE 10 EQUITY AFTER KATRINA: Voices in Urban Education #10
The terrible destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina exposed for all the world what educators have long known: America remains deeply divided by race and class, and the lack of opportunities for poor people and people of color have devastating consequences. Given that reality, how can we ensure equity and excellence for all children? In the latest issue of the Annenberg Institute's Voices in Urban Education, authors Gloria Ladson-Billings, Jonathan Kozol, Charles Willie, Dennie Palmer Wolf and Hal Smith express sadness and anger at the inequities highlighted by Katrina and point to what needs to be done for a better future.

Report Cover BUILDING ON SUCCESS IN A TIME OF TRANSITION
While most urban school districts face rapid turnover in leadership and limited results, Boston has won national attention for its stability and success. As Superintendent Thomas Payzant prepares to step down after 10 years, the Annenberg Institute and the Aspen Institute undertook a study of the current accomplishments and future challenges in the Boston Public Schools; the findings have been published in Strong Foundation, Evolving Challenges: A Case Study to Support Leadership Transition in the Boston Public Schools. In a recent commentary in Education Week, the study's external reviewers — the Institute's Executive Director Warren Simmons along with Norman Fruchter, Deanna Burney, and Tony Bryk — highlight the lessons and implications of the findings for other large urban school districts.

PUTTING THE "PUBLIC" IN PUBLIC EDUCATION
The March issue of Public Engagement Watch offers up-to-date information on closing the achievement gap, community engagement, and extended learning opportunities. PE Watch is co-produced by the Annenberg Institute and the National League of Cities as a resource to help municipal and community leaders build strong connections with local public schools The issue also looks at the effect of school-level partnerships, the role of mayors in reforming public education, a report on gains made by Boston's Pilot Schools, and the attributes of schools reporting improvement by lowest-achieving students. The "Tools" section features links to a compendium of out-of-school programs and to online resources offered by Hedrick Smith's PBS documentary "Making Schools Work," which aired earlier this year.
