SMALL SCHOOLS: Can they work for minority and disadvantaged students?
The Annenberg Institute and the University of Washington are co-convening RACE, SMALL SCHOOLS AND HIGH SCHOOL REFORM in Seattle on June 19. Recent research has touted the benefits of small schools, especially for urban students, yet it runs contrary to the experience of many educators that children of color are more poorly served now than before the civil rights movement. A group of 47 African American, Hispanic and white practitioners and researchers will bring together issues of professional development/school organization and issues of culture/equity in what we hope will be the first in a series of ground-breaking conversations.

TOOLS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY: School Improvement in a Box
The Annenberg Institute has just released the first "drawer" in its TOOLBOX FOR ACCOUNTABILITY — an in-depth introduction to using SURVEYS as part of an ongoing school-improvement program, including seven school-tested survey instruments with advice on how to use them. An abridged version of the Survey drawer is available on the AISR Web site. Future drawers include: Standardized-Test Data, Equity and Access, and Teacher Assignments.

SCHOOL LEADERSHIP Series in Phi Delta Kappan
The June 2001 issue of Phi Delta Kappan features a Special Section on THE CHALLENGES OF LEADERSHIP, compiled and edited by staff at the Annenberg Institute. In five articles, educational leaders associated with the Institute and the Annenberg Challenge examine the changing roles of school leadership and how leaders at every level — from the classroom to the school-board room — are turning their attention to increasing student achievement.

AN AISR CALENDAR OF EVENTS — Now Online
The Institute has posted a new online calendar of its recent and upcoming convening activities — conferences, meetings, seminars. These events bring together educators, policy makers, researchers, and others concerned about education to address issues at the top of the school reform agenda. A brief description of each event includes links to online resources that provide visitors with background information on the issue and food for thought.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: Just Waiting to Be Asked?
A recent survey by Public Agenda found that increasing public engagement in schools — especially among parents — is a key goal for many educators. Funded in part by the Annenberg Institute, the survey asked 686 superintendents, 475 school board members, 404 teachers and 809 adults in the general public about their attitudes on community involvement.
> The complete results of JUST WAITING TO BE ASKED? A FRESH LOOK AT ATTITUDES ON PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT are available at the Public Agenda Web site.
