DISTRICT TASK FORCE WEB SITE: A resource for practitioners and policy makers
The Annenberg Institute's five-year initiative to help create, support, and sustain high-achieving schools in urban communities launched its public Web site on October 1. The site presents information about School Communities that Work: A National Task Force on the Future of Urban Districts, its framework for action, topical bibliographies, research reports, and updates on the progress of the Task Force. Currently in production: a report on Intra- and Inter-District Inequities (expected October 2001), Design for an Equity-Focused School District (expected November 2001), a National Study of Reform Support Organizations (expected November 2001), and a Central Office Assessment Tool (expected January 2002).

INSIDE THE ANNENBERG CHALLENGE: What's new at Challenge sites?
The Annenberg Institute has just published the Fall 2001 issue of "Inside the Annenberg Challenge," highlighting recent accomplishments in the projects established under Ambassador Walter H. Annenberg's $500-million "Challenge to the Nation" to improve our public schools. This issue features sites receiving Carnegie high school grants and funding for an innovative teacher development and retention program in New York City.

SMALL SCHOOLS AND RACE: A discussion among urban school reformers
The Annenberg Institute's meeting on Race, Small Schools and High School Reform, held in Seattle in mid-June, generated timely and frank dialogue on what is needed to create schools that are effective for all students, particularly students of color. A full summary of the discussion has been prepared, characterizing the issues raised by the participants, the obstacles they have encountered, and ways they see to address them. The meeting organizers are hoping to sustain the dialogue begun in Seattle, initially through writing, research, and ongoing conversation.

ANNENBERG CHALLENGE SITES FOCUS ON LITERACY
The Annenberg Institute works with Annenberg Challenge sites to promote and develop their capacity to share with and learn from each other. In November, the Boston Plan for Excellence (which has overseen the Annenberg Challenge in that city) will convene representatives from Challenge sites that are focusing on literacy. Boston has been engaged for several years in school-based professional development in which coaches work on site with teachers to help them improve instruction. Literacy coaches will introduce participants to the coaching model their schools are piloting, a program that is more concentrated and collaborative and designed to reach most teachers. Participants will have an opportunity to observe in classrooms and debrief with key district policy makers and BPE staff.
