SMALL SCHOOLS AND RACE (VUE 2)
VUE cover image The second issue of Voices in Urban Education, the Annenberg Institute's "roundtable in print," focuses on small schools and their effectiveness for youths of color. The authors — Theresa Perry, Patricia A. Wasley, Wendy Puriefoy, Thomas Toch, and Warren Simmons — examine how small schools do, and do not, work for all students and what it might take for small schools to become a significant strategy in urban school reform.

WILLIAM SAFIRE INTERVIEWS WARREN SIMMONS
The Institute's executive director, Warren Simmons, was featured in an interview session with columnist William Safire at a conference on the arts and education reform. Safire is chairman of the board of directors of the Dana Foundation, which sponsored a conference on the role of performing arts centers in education: "Acts of Achievement" drew arts educators and teaching artists to two days of workshops and programs in Washington, DC, in April 2003.

HELPING DISTRICTS BUILD CAPACITY FOR EXCELLENCE
SCtW Newsletter The Annenberg Institute's School Communities that Work Task Force on the Future of Urban Districts has just released its latest newsletter, about the importance of good relationships between districts and the organizations they partner with to support reform efforts. Citing the findings in a report on "Reforming Relationships," published earlier this year by the Institute, the newsletter highlights the qualities of effective relationships and includes an interview with Dan Challener of the Chattanooga Public Education Fund, which has been a strong partner with the Hamilton County Public Schools in its efforts to raise student achievement.

A PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT PARTNERSHIP WITH NLC
The Annenberg Institute and the Institute for Youth, Education, and Families of the National League of Cities (NLC) are joining forces to help municipal leaders engage their communities in school improvement. The Institute and NLC will work jointly with NLC's network of elected city officials to provide site-based technical support, develop new tools for civic engagement, and prepare case studies to document successful practices. Staff from the two organizations have begun working with city officials in St. Louis to design a broad-based community and parent engagement strategy.

SUPPORTING RHODE ISLAND SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT
As a part of the Rhode Island community, the Annenberg Institute supports educational improvement across the state and in the city of Providence. We have created a new page on our Web site that focuses on our work with statewide efforts and in several local communities. The page also offers a calendar of upcoming education events in Rhode Island and a useful list of RI educational Web links.
