BUILDING ‘SMART EDUCATION SYSTEMS’
For all students to learn at high levels requires both a high-functioning school district and a comprehensive web of community supports for children, youth, and families. In a recent Education Week Commentary, Institute principal associate Robert Rothman describes how a “smart education system” can create the adaptive and efficient infrastructure to link these two essential components of quality education.

WILL CHARTER SCHOOLS GO THE WAY OF ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS?
Norm Fruchter, the Institute’s director of Community Involvement, looks at the similarities between today’s charter schools and the alternative schools movement of the 1960s and '70s and asks whether they will share the same fate. This Education Week Commentary also argues that alternative schools left a larger legacy than education historians tend to credit.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING IN PUBLIC EDUCATION
Viewpoints and discussion on collective bargaining in public education by national leaders in the field including Marc Tucker, Randi Weingarten, Alan Bersin, Andrew Rotherham, Brad Jupp, and others are presented in a new Web site hosted by the Annenberg Institute. The dialogue was recorded at a December 2006 conference examining the role of state policy-makers, teacher unions, and local school districts in supporting improved outcomes for all students. The site features issue summaries with video and audio clips of key speakers, as well as a book with Andrew Rotherham’s keynote presentation and interviews with Alan Bersin and Randi Weingarten.

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT WATCH
This newest issue of PE Watch features Senate testimony from Anne Henderson describing the implications of research on family involvement for the reauthorization of NCLB. Also included: a report summarizing research on the link between family involvement and academic and social outcomes of middle and high school students; and a new online tool from the Education Commission of the States highlighting policies and practices that improve leadership capacity in schools, districts, and states.
