cover for VUE 13 ENGAGING COMMUNITIES TO IMPROVE EDUCATION
Educators increasingly recognize that community engagement is an essential component of education reform. It builds support for public schools and creates pressure for improvement. What does authentic community engagement look like, and how can it serve the goal of educational improvement? The latest issue of the Annenberg Institute's quarterly journal, Voices in Urban Education #13, provides five perspectives on ways that whole communities can engage in education and create demand and support for changes that will benefit all young people.

An alliance between the Annenberg Institute and New Visions for Public Schools, in the United States, and the Department for Education and Skills and the Academies Trust, in the United Kingdom, is seeking to incorporate the best thinking about urban education systems to create demonstrably better outcomes for students, parents, and communities. The Transatlantic School Innovation Alliance, which was officially launched on November 15, pairs small high schools in New York City and London in order to share different ideas about common problems and to foster innovative practice in evidence-informed instruction, student engagement, and community partnerships.

Book jacket PUBLIC WILL TO MAKE URBAN EDUCATION WORK
A new book by the Annenberg Institute's Norm Fruchter draws on a rich array of research and personal experience to examine why, fifty years beyond Brown v. Board, urban districts have failed poor students of color and what must be done to transform our city schools. Profiling three urban districts that have achieved significant success in closing the achievement gap, he points to grassroots community organizing as a critical lever for provoking and supporting meaningful change in schools. Urban Schools, Public Will: Making Education Work for All Our Children is being released by Teachers College Press in December.

EXPANDING OPTIONS FOR URBAN HIGH SCHOOLS
The latest issue of Public Engagement Watch highlights strategies for expanding high school options in urban districts. The "News" section features a recent article by the Annenberg Institute's Robert Rothman on using a wide range of educational approaches to meet the needs of our most vulnerable students. The issue also highlights a recent study from the Data Quality Campaign on effective uses of student-level data and a resource from the Alliance for Excellent Education that allows users to compare the performance of high schools within each state. PE Watch is prepared by the Annenberg Institute in collaboration with the National League of Cities.
