Author Biographies


Carolyn Akers Carolyn Akers

The Mobile Area Education Foundation was founded in 1992 by Carolyn Akers as "Mobile 2000". Carolyn is a graduate of the University of Alabama, with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry. She is married to Stanley Akers, Sr. and has two children, Clint and Virginia. Carolyn has served on a number of community boards and commissions and is a graduate of Leadership Alabama. At present, she is a steering committee member of Mobile United and Envision-Mobile-Baldwin and the state A+ Research and Education Foundation. Among the awards that she has been honored with include the Point of Excellence Award for Kappa Delta Pi, the 2001 YWCA Woman of Achievement for Public Achievement, the National McKee Award for Partners in Education, the 2001-2002 Southeastern Association of Elementary School Principals Award for Outstanding Contributions to Public Education and the 2002 Lillian McGowin/AFP for Outstanding Civic Leader.

Michael Fullan Michael Fullan

Michael Fullan is the former Dean of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. Recognized as an international authority on educational reform, Michael is engaged in training, consulting, and evaluating change projects around the world. His ideas for managing change are used in many countries, and his books have been published in many languages.

Michael Fullan led the evaluation team which conducted the four-year assessment of the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy in England from 1998-2003. In April 2004 he was appointed Special Advisor to the Premier and Minister of Education in Ontario.

Steve Gering Steve Gering

Steve Gering is deputy superintendent for teaching and learning for Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. Previously, as executive director of instruction, he was responsible for the implementation of First things First in all Kansas City's schools.

Thomas W. Payzant Thomas W. Payzant

Thomas W. Payzant is superintendent of Boston Public Schools. In March of 1993, Dr. Payzant was appointed by President Clinton to serve as Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education with the United States Department of Education. Dr. Payzant led the Department's delegation to Congress when it enacted the Improving America's Schools Act (IASA), which reauthorized the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. He also worked closely with the Administration to enact passage of the Goals 2000: Educate America Act, the Safe Schools Act, and the School-to-Work Opportunities Act. In 2004, Dr. Payzant was awarded the prestigious Richard R. Green Award in Urban Excellence from the Council of the Great City Schools. Dr. Payzant also was named a 2005 Public Official of the Year by Governing magazine.

    Robert Rothman

Robert Rothman is responsible for writing Institute publications and editing the Institute's quarterly journal Voices in Urban Education, a "roundtable-in-print" designed to air diverse viewpoints and share new knowledge on vital issues in urban education. He has written for numerous education publications and organizations and was a reporter and editor for Education Week. He was also a senior project associate for Achieve, a study director for the National Research Council, and the director of special projects for the National Center on Education and the Economy. Bob holds a BA in political science from Yale University. He is the author of Measuring Up: Standards, Assessment and School Reform and numerous book chapters and articles on testing and education reform.

Name Lyn Sharratt

Lyn Sharratt is the Superintendent of Curriculum and Instructional Services in the York Region District School Board, north of Toronto, Canada and an associate with the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/University of Toronto. She has taught in three other school districts as well as having been an Associate Professor at York University, pre-service program; Executive Assistant, Professional Development, with the Federation of Women Teachers' Association in Ontario; and Director of Curriculum at the Ontario Public Schools Boards' Association working with elected trustees across the Province of Ontario.

Lyn has written many articles on technology implementation, school improvement, change, leadership development and increasing student achievement through literacy. She is an Associate at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto.

David Wynde has been co-chair of the board of education of Portland Public Schools since January 2005 and board member since 2003.
