WHAT WE DO
The Institute's Community Involvement Program (CIP) began an initiative to support youth organizing for high school improvement in New York City in 2004 (when CIP was affiliated with NYU; it is now affiliated with Brown University). This work grew out of CIP's experience with parent organizing and was informed by a survey of the organizational needs of existing youth groups.
Currently our youth organizing work includes:
- Coordinating and providing research to support the Urban Youth Collaborative and UYC Student Union, and
- Convening an annual Youth Organizing Institute on Educational Policy for young people involved in high school reform campaigns.
The Urban Youth Collaborative is a coalition of four youth organizations:
- Make the Road by Walking
- Sistas and Brothas United
- Youth On the Move/Mothers On the Move
- Future of Tomorrow
and the UYC Student Union, a network of 15 youth organizations. The Annenberg Institute provides intensive training on education policy issues to high school youth activists through our annual Youth Organizing Institute.
What Students are Saying
“My school is very unorganized. Students get lost in the system. There are too many staff people focused on enforcing discipline and order and not enough focused on helping us to graduate and go to college. I believe the solution can be found in organizing people, youth especially. Organizing helps build people power so that those with power over education in our communities will become accountable to us.”

THE CHALLENGE
How can young people's needs and insights become a powerful force in improving the high schools they attend? For instance, how do students win a role in demanding and designing college access and the preparation for post-secondary pathways they know they need in a district that is not accustomed to making youth a serious partner?
MISSION
The mission of UYC is to hold the New York City Department of Education accountable for ensuring that all New York City high schools prepare young people to go to college, find meaningful employment, and work for justice in society. UYC works for expanded youth power in systemic educational policy decisions, and increased equity and quality in high school education in New York City.
The UYC Agenda for High School Reform calls for:
- Opportunities for student involvement in planning the transition from large to small high schools;
- Academic support and counseling to ensure that all students are on the path to college;
- Safe, secure and non-threatening learning environments; and
- Facilities that support student learning
