Annenberg Organizations

The ANNENBERG FOUNDATION is the Ambassador Walter H. Annenberg family's private charitable trust, based in St. David's, Pennsylvania. Among the Foundation's philanthropic beneficiaries are the organizations listed below, which bear the donor's name. The Foundation's current grant-making focus is on elementary and secondary public school reform. The Foundation oversees the funding of the Annenberg Challenge. It approved the proposals from and disburses the monies to the Challenge grantees (eighteen local sites, the Annenberg Institute, New American Schools, and the Education Commission of the States).

The following organizations were established with major gifts from Ambassador Walter H. Annenberg and bear his name:

Annenberg Institute for School Reform
  • The Annenberg Institute for School Reform was one of the first recipients of monies from the Annenberg Challenge, a $50-million operating and endowment grant. The Institute was involved in designing parameters for applying for Challenge grants to local sites and is responsible for coordinating and evaluating the nationwide Challenge effort. The Institute did not and does not play any role in the selection of grantees or in the allocation of the funds, which are the sole prerogatives of the Foundation. Its mission is to develop, share, and act on knowledge that improves the conditions and outcomes of schooling in America, especially in urban communities and in schools serving disadvantaged children. Its current work focuses on school district redesign, educational leadership, connecting schools to community assets, rethinking accountability, and comprehensive school reform design. The Institute also oversees the coordination and evaluation of programs in the Annenberg Challenge sites but plays no role in the selection of grantees or the allocation of the funds, which is the sole prerogative of the Foundation.
