To help transform and improve education in a newly consolidated school district (formerly the city of Chattanooga and Hamilton County), the Public Education Fund assisted in the establishment of academic standards and provided support for teachers, principals, parents and the community to help ensure student achievement of the benchmarks. This initiative concentrated on four areas: standards, leadership, whole school change, and family and community engagement. "Standards support teachers" provided daily assistance, training, and advice to each school's teaching faculty. "New Visions" grants challenged schools to undergo comprehensive school reform. The Community Campaign for School Success worked to increase parent and community involvement in education. Through a second grant, the Public Education Fund focused upon leadership development for teachers, principals, and district administrators and created a state-of-the-art leadership center. The Public Education Fund has continued to focus upon the same four program areas but with an increased concentration on high schools as a result of a Schools for a New Society grant awarded by the Carnegie Corporation.
