Opportunity and achievement gaps experienced by students and families in communities of color and impoverished areas manifest in myriad ways in the everyday realities of teachers. The lived experiences of teachers and the expertise that develops as a result must be harnessed effectively to ensure that education policy can help us realize the promise of public education to combat social inequities, uplift communities, and create opportunities for college, career, and civic life.

With an aim to lift the potential and power of teacher voice in shaping the educational landscape, this project will: develop a Teacher Leadership and Advocacy framework to better understand the role that teachers can play in affecting education policy outside the classroom; conduct a national scan for promising examples of teacher leadership and advocacy in the field; and make recommendations for policy and funding strategies moving forward.
